Why should we avoid eating processed breakfast cereals? There are a number of reasons: their high levels of sugar, processed carbohydrates, and preservatives to name just a few.
But recently, a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry revealed one more big reason to avoid them. In a 2 year study, scientists looked at 489 samples of corn-, rice-, wheat-, and oat-based breakfast cereals bought from U.S. stores. They found Ochratoxin A (OTA), a toxin produced by mold and fungi, in 205 of the samples- with the highest levels being found in oat-based cereals.
OTA is potentially cancer causing, it is toxic to the brain, suppresses the immune system and creates toxins within the immune system.
Some might say, though, that because most of the OTA containing cereals studied have amounts below the European Commission Regulation, eating them would not hurt you.
My question is, if you know that harmful toxins exist in certain foods (in any amount), why wouldn’t you want to avoid them entirely?
Our immune systems are already battling it out while under fire from our unhealthy North American diet, our reliance on good bacteria-killing antibiotics, environmental radiation, pesticides in our foods, and more.
If we can cut back on our exposure to toxins in any way, why not make that move?
