Pam Bartha, founder of Live Disease Free, shares a powerful conversation with fitness expert and bodybuilder David Lyons about what it really takes to rebuild mobility and strength when you live with multiple sclerosis (MS) or another chronic neurological condition.

Pam focuses on treating the root cause, which are chronic parasitic infections that cause inflammation and damage the brain, spinal cord and muscles. David’s OptimalBody and OptimalBody + OptimalMind systems show how to retrain the nervous system, rebuild muscle and restore function, so people can take back their mobility.

Together, their approaches remove the infections that cause MS and other chronic diseases, and then use targeted, science based training to restore strength, coordination and independence.

David Lyons: From Paralysis To Full Strength

Before MS, David spent 25 years as a fitness expert. He was a bodybuilder, martial artist and almost a professional boxer. He was always in the gym and in excellent condition.

Five days before his diagnosis, he was working out as usual. Then everything changed. He was admitted to the hospital, paralyzed from the chest down. His arms were just flopping around. Doctors suspected brain cancer or a brain tumor before finally diagnosing his with MS.

Like many people with MS, he was told he would likely be in a wheelchair within six months. His first response was to try to “beat” MS with bodybuilding. He went back to heavy training. At age 50, he competed in a bodybuilding show and won a major trophy.

However, his MS was getting worse. His wife Kendra, a registered nurse and co founder of the MS Fitness Challenge, pointed out that he looked great but could barely walk. He was dragging his leg and needed help getting on and off equipment. She asked how this was helping his or anyone else’s MS.

That question changed everything. David realized that traditional bodybuilding and generic gym training were not addressing the neurological limitations that MS creates. It was not enough to work out and look strong if his nervous system could not properly connect to his muscles.

He went back to studying how the brain, nervous system and muscles work together. Out of years of research and using himself as a test subject, he developed OptimalBody training methods, and later partnered with Matt Rowe to create “OptimalBody + OptimalMind,” designed specifically for people with MS and other chronic neurological or neuromuscular conditions.

The Five Processes That Drive OptimalBody

David explains that generic exercise or basic physiotherapy is not enough for MS. To restore function, training must trigger five specific processes in the brain and body at the same time:

  1. BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor)
BDNF is a protein that supports neuron health in the brain and spinal cord. It creates the conditions for repair and regeneration. Without BDNF, the nervous system does not have the environment it needs to recover.
  2. Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to form new connections and reroute signals. It is a key word in MS, but David points out a critical detail. Neuroplasticity depends on BDNF. BDNF happens first. It sets the stage. Then neuroplasticity can happen in a meaningful way.
  3. Acetylcholine
Acetylcholine is the chemical messenger that allows the brain to tell muscles to move. Without acetylcholine, muscles do not fire. David designs his training to increase acetylcholine activity, so commands from the brain actually result in muscle movement.
  4. Brain to muscle connection
The signals from the brain to the muscles must be strong and clear. Years of nerve damage, deconditioning and compensation patterns can weaken this connection. David’s methods retrain and wake up these pathways, so the brain can communicate effectively with the body again.
  5. Muscle fiber activation and anabolic effect
Muscles must be activated deeply enough to rebuild mass and strength. David focuses on muscle fiber activation and the anabolic, or muscle building, effect. The goal is not only better movement, but real strength and stability.

In OptimalBody, the exercises, intensity and timing are built to activate all five processes together in short sessions. By doing this, David went from being unable to lift his left leg, unable to raise his knee off the ground, unable to do a calf raise or squeeze his fingers, to full mobility and strength. Today he runs, jumps and squats 500 pounds using the very methods he teaches.

Why Most MS Exercise Advice Falls Short

David is very direct about the limitations of typical exercise advice for MS and chronic conditions. Many experts do not have MS themselves. They offer cookie cutter routines or simple drills, such as following a pen with the eyes while turning the head. These activities may have some value, but they usually do not create the internal environment the nervous system needs to repair and reconnect.

Repeating the same movement over and over can cause the body to plateau. The nervous system and muscles are not being retrained together. People often work hard and see little long term change.

OptimalBody is different because it:

  • Integrates nervous system and muscle training
  • Continually varies and progresses tasks within a tested structure
  • Targets real life functions such as standing, walking, balancing and lifting, not just exercise minutes

David has helped thousands of people follow this approach. He has seen people get out of wheelchairs, regain daily functions such as combing their hair, and even compete as fitness models and bodybuilders. The goal is not bodybuilding for the stage. The goal is to “build the body” by reconnecting the nervous system so the body works properly again.

The Mindset Piece: OptimalBody Meets OptimalMind

David also understands the impact of negative medical messaging. When he was in hospital, multiple doctors told him he would be in a wheelchair within six months. Recently he spoke to a newly diagnosed woman who heard the exact same prediction. He believes this tells patients they will fail before they even start.

To address this, he partnered with Matt Rowe, a former triathlete who was also told he would be in a wheelchair within six months. Together they created OptimalBody + OptimalMind.

In this combined program:

  • David leads the body work
  • Matt leads the mindset work

Matt helps people move from temporary motivation to lasting commitment. David explains that motivation is a fleeting emotion. Commitment is what keeps people doing the hard but necessary work day after day.

This is very similar to the Live Disease Free approach. Pam teaches her students to believe in the possibility of recovery, to find their strong personal “intention and why,” and to follow a clear plan step by step. When people begin to see real results, this lived experience strengthens their belief and commitment further.

“Am I Too Disabled For This?”

Many people ask if they are too disabled to benefit from this approach. David prefers the word “limited” and believes limitations can change.

He shares the story of Pat, a 75 year old woman who had lived with MS for 30 years. She came to him in a wheelchair. Her legs were not working. Her arms hung down. One arm could not lift at all. The other arm could lift only slightly. She had worked with trainers and physical therapists for seven years and still could not comb her own hair.

She told him, “You are my last hope. I do not want to live like this.” David did not promise that she would run a marathon. He did promise that he could make her stronger and more mobile within months.

He filmed her progress. On video, she later raises her arm to the point that she can comb her hair. She stands at a fence on his property and holds on, something she could not do before. With more time and training, she becomes stronger and more mobile.

This story reflects what David sees again and again. Whatever your current limitations, there is room to improve if you combine the right mindset, a science based training strategy and consistent follow through.

Treat The Root Cause And Rebuild The Body

Pam’s work brings the other essential half of the picture. Through her own 35 plus years of being MS free and decades of research and coaching, she has discovered that chronic parasitic infections are the main drivers of MS and many other chronic diseases. These infections include worms, protozoa, fungi and bacteria. They cause dysbiosis, inflammation, immune dysfunction and direct neurological damage. They are rarely identified or treated in standard care.

In the Live Disease Free Plan, students:

  • Follow the Live Disease Free Diet to weaken parasites and reduce inflammation
  • Support detoxification, bowel function and sleep in a structured “prep phase”
  • Use strategic, step by step parasite treatments guided by symptoms, history and energy testing
  • Rebuild the microbiome and maintain results with regular parasite treatment

As parasites are treated, symptoms such as spasticity, balance problems, drop foot, tremors, pain, bladder issues, fatigue brain fog and many other symptoms improve and resolve. Many students move from walkers, scooters and wheelchairs to independent walking and a much more active life.

Parasites and inflammation do leave damage behind. For this reason, Pam strongly emphasizes the importance of “taking back your mobility.” She believes David’s OptimalBody + OptimalMind system is one of the most effective tools to do this. It targets the damaged nervous system and muscles so people can regain strength, coordination and confidence while they treat the infections that caused the disease in the first place.

Real World Success: Lisa May, Terri, Tiffany, Melissa And A 13 Year Old Girl

Treating parasites while following a holistic approach can produce results that standard care does not expect.

Lisa May, Registered Nurse

Lisa May is a registered nurse who originally only wanted drug-based solutions for MS. Over five years, she tried everything her neurologist offered. She developed severe cognitive problems, pain in her legs and feet, burning in her hands and feet, spasticity, low mood and extreme fatigue. She eventually had to leave her job in the emergency department.

Six weeks before learning about Live Disease Free, she prayed for a cure. Two months into the plan:

  • Her overnight bladder issues settled
  • MS fatigue and brain fog disappeared
  • Spasticity resolved and burning in hands and feet reduced dramatically
  • Her mood improved and anxiety decreased
  • She came off all MS medications and could engage fully with family and friends again

One year later, her neurologist reported that her test results were normal and looked like someone without MS. Her cognition tested above average and she could no longer qualify for the MS brain studies she had been in before. She remains free from MS symptoms, has three healthy daughters and runs a wellness clinic in Ontario.

Terri

Five years after Terri’s mom died of MS, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis herself, and by the time she discovered the Live Disease Free Plan, she had already been in a scooter for eight years.

She had muscle weakness, spasms, poor balance, fatigue and deep depression.

About 90 days into the Live Disease Free Plan:

  • Spasticity resolved and her balance returned
  • She progressed from a scooter to crutches and then to walking without aids
  • She lost 45 pounds by choice
  • She came off three MS drugs
  • She resumed mowing her acreage and later managed her seven horses and two dogs alone while her husband traveled for work

After a year off medications, her neurologist told her she no longer needed routine MRIs or regular checkups and should just call if needed. Terri believes the plan saved her life.

Melissa

Ten years before the Live Disease Free Plan, Melissa had an MS attack so severe that she had to relearn how to walk. After working through the plan and treating parasites:

  • Her balance returned and she was able to wear heels again
  • She became symptom-free with good energy and stable mood
  • She came off MS medications
  • She began going to the gym five days a week
  • She returned to work for the first time in ten years and later started a health food company and published a book about her healing journey

She has lived free from MS symptoms for many years after treating the root cause, has written a book, and now owns a health food company.

A 13 Year Old Boy

A recent success is a 13 year old boy who was diagnosed with MS in January. His first MS attack put him in a wheelchair. After following the Live Disease Free Plan and treating parasites, he has fully recovered his mobility. He recently completed his first tennis match again.

His practitioners are shocked at his miraculous recovery. For his family, moving from a wheelchair after a first attack to playing tennis again is life changing. It shows how quickly recovery can begin when the true cause is treated and mobility is actively retrained.

Why This Combination Works

Pam and David both stress that diet and generic exercise are not enough to recover from chronic parasitic infections and MS type diseases. Pills alone are not enough either.

People who do best:

  • Treat chronic parasitic infections and dysbiosis
  • Correct nutritional deficiencies and reduce toxins
  • Follow a structured, neurology focused training plan like OptimalBody
  • Build a strong mindset and long-term commitment through programs like OptimalMind

Pam tells her students that they can have more recovery than they thought possible when they support the body in the right ways. David’s story and the results of his clients confirm this. He is now 68 years old and trains like someone much younger, because he decided to take control and develop methods that work with, rather than against, MS.

For the Live Disease Free community, David’s OptimalBody + OptimalMind system is a powerful addition. As parasites are treated effectively and the body is supported, his program provides a clear way to reclaim strength and mobility.

There are real solutions to recover from parasites today!

To restore health, we must focus on treating the cause of inflammation, which are parasites. First, identify the enemy (parasites), then support the body and treat the parasites while following a holistic approach. When parasitic infections are treated effectively, we can overcome inflammation or disease.
